The importance of fish oil and varying fish oil's.

Updated: Dec 29, 2023

Rotating fish oils in a dog's diet can provide several benefits, primarily related to their overall health and well-being. Fish oils are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, specifically eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are essential nutrients for dogs. Here's why rotating fish oils can be important:

  1. Diverse Nutrient Profile: Different fish species and sources of fish oil can have slightly varying nutrient profiles. By rotating fish oils from different sources, you can ensure that your dog receives a broader spectrum of essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. This helps promote overall health and minimizes the risk of deficiencies.

  2. Balanced Omega-3 to Omega-6 Ratio: Dogs, like humans, require a balanced ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids in their diet. Many commercial pet foods are high in omega-6 fatty acids due to ingredients like vegetable oils. Fish oils help to balance this ratio, which is important for maintaining healthy skin, coat, immune system function, and inflammatory responses.

  3. Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, have anti-inflammatory effects. Regular consumption of fish oils can help manage chronic inflammatory conditions such as allergies, arthritis, and skin issues in dogs. (The daily dose can be doubled for a more specific anti inflammatory effect - such as for seniors or dogs that suffer from joint issues)

  4. Joint Health: Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to support joint health by reducing inflammation and supporting the lubrication of joints. Rotating fish oils can help provide a consistent supply of these beneficial compounds to maintain your dog's mobility and comfort, especially as they age.

  5. Skin and Coat Health: Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for maintaining healthy skin and a glossy coat. Regular intake of fish oils can alleviate dry, itchy skin, reduce shedding, and promote a soft, shiny coat.

  6. Cognitive Health: DHA, one of the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oils, is important for cognitive function and brain health. Providing a variety of fish oils can help support your dog's cognitive abilities and overall mental well-being.

  7. Heart Health: Omega-3 fatty acids are known to support cardiovascular health by reducing triglycerides, improving blood vessel function, and helping to regulate heart rhythms. Regular rotation of fish oils can contribute to your dog's heart health.

Rotating between varying proteins and sources such as white fish oil, salmon oil, seal oil or algae oil can ensure a good balance of benefits and reduce chances of reactions to high traces of mercury.

Depending on where the fish are coming from (and if your dog already has a source of fish protein in their diet, where those fish are sourced from), sticking to an oil that is coming from farmed fish could possibly lead to a reaction mercury levels. Seal oil is a great alternative and algae oil is a bio responsible option that provides a plant based omega's with all the same benefits, and no harm to our oceans!
